Why study at AIE?

AIE, the Academic Institute of Excellence, is a private South African college (DHET registration 2018/FE07/003) with campuses in Cape Town, Johannesburg (Greenside), Midrand and Pretoria (Hatfield), plus fully online study. If you're comparing it against a public university or another private college, here's what actually sets it apart.

Career-focused, not generalist

AIE's course list leans hard into technical, career-orientated qualifications rather than broad academic degrees - architecture and architectural technology, civil/electrical/mechanical engineering, IT and data science, draughting, business and management, and design. If you already know roughly which industry you want to work in, that focus can get you job-ready faster than a general degree.

Study your way: full-time, part-time or online

The same qualifications are available on campus full-time, part-time flexi, or fully online, which matters if you're working while studying, live far from a campus, or need to spread study around other commitments. This flexibility is one of AIE's main differentiators versus a traditional residential university.

      AIE campuses across South Africa

AIE now runs five campuses, so where you live can follow where you actually want to study. As of this writing, AIE's campuses are: De Waterkant, Cape Town (The Foundry, Cardiff St) — the Cape Town campus; Greenside, Johannesburg (118 Greenway) — home to AIE's School of Art & Design; Waterfall, Midrand (1 Oracle Close) — AIE's original Gauteng campus, including its newer Artisan Campus for technical trades; Hatfield, Pretoria (1043 Pretorius St) — closer to Tshwane's student hubs; and a fully Virtual/Online option for students studying from anywhere in South Africa. Always confirm the current campus list and exact address with AIE directly before you commit, since colleges do add or move campuses (see our NSFAS and per-city accommodation guides).

A path back in if your matric marks fall short

If your current marks don't meet the entry requirement for the course you want, AIE offers a matric upgrade option rather than making you wait a year to reapply blind. Ask about this directly when you enquire - it's worth raising even if you're not sure your marks are a problem.

What to check before you commit

Entry requirements vary by course and NQF/N-level, so confirm the specific requirement for your course of interest directly with AIE's admissions team rather than assuming. Also ask about accreditation for your specific qualification, campus-specific facilities if you're studying on campus, and total cost including any once-off registration fees.
