Where to live in Stellenbosch as a student
Stellenbosch is compact, but where you live still shapes your whole year: whether you walk to an 8 am lecture or hunt for parking, and whether you can get home easily after a late night in the library. This guide covers the main student areas and what to expect from each, starting with Stellenbosch Central, home to The One, Stellenbosch. Walking times are rough guides - always check the route from a specific address to your own faculty.
Stellenbosch Central
The town centre sits right alongside the university, so living centrally means lectures, the Neelsie, shops, restaurants and nightlife are all a short walk away, and you can comfortably live without a car. It is the most convenient area for students and demand is highest here.
The One, Stellenbosch is on Dennesig Street in Stellenbosch Central: according to the residence, about 650 metres from main campus and roughly 1.2 km from both the Neelsie Student Centre and the Engineering Faculty, with a Pick n Pay close by. It has 508 furnished en-suite units with kitchenettes, 24-hour biometric security and its own study centre, gym, pool and restaurant. Shared studios are listed on DigsConnect from R11,100 per month and private studios from R16,910 per month. Prices and availability are as shown on the DigsConnect listing at the time of writing and can change, so always confirm the current rate on the listing before you budget around it.
Other areas students live in
- Dennesig: just north of the centre, with many student flats and houses; generally walkable to campus. The One sits on Dennesig Street, where this area meets the centre.
- Universiteitsoord and Simonswyk: leafy residential suburbs on the campus side of town, popular for shared digs; walkable or an easy cycle.
- La Colline: north-west of the centre, a mix of houses and flats; a longer walk or a short cycle.
- Die Boord, Dalsig and Paradyskloof: quieter suburbs to the south with more family homes; you will usually want a bike or a car.
- Welgevonden and other outlying estates: newer and often better value per square metre, but realistically you need a car and campus parking.
Why close to campus is usually worth it
- Time: a 10-minute walk instead of a commute, several times a day.
- Cost: no petrol, no campus parking, often no car at all - see our getting to campus guide.
- Safety: a short, busy, well-lit walk home beats a long one after dark.
- Student life: it is easier to say yes to study groups, societies and sport when you live five minutes away.
Staying safe wherever you live
Stellenbosch is a student town, but normal precautions apply. Choose accommodation with controlled access and on-site security where you can, walk in groups at night and stick to busy routes. Buildings such as The One add 24-hour security, biometric access, CCTV and a 24/7 concierge, and its developers have committed R35 million to 11 urban upgrade projects in the surrounding neighbourhood, including security and infrastructure improvements.
