Student accommodation near NWU: Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark

North-West University has three campuses in three very different places: Potchefstroom, a classic university town; Mahikeng, the provincial capital; and Vanderbijlpark, on the Vaal River. All three have NWU residences, but there are more students than beds, and many senior students choose private accommodation. Confirm residence fees and application dates on nwu.ac.za.

Potchefstroom campus

Potchefstroom is built around the university. Students live in the suburbs that wrap around campus - Die Bult, right at the campus gates, is the heart of student life, with Dassierand and other nearby suburbs close behind. Most private accommodation is communes, garden flats and purpose-built student blocks, and nearly everything is a walk or cycle from lectures. Browse student accommodation in Potchefstroom.

    Mahikeng campus

The Mahikeng campus is on the edge of Mmabatho. Private supply is smaller than in Potchefstroom and is mostly rooms and houses in Mmabatho's residential units and in Mahikeng itself, so ask the campus residence office which private providers are accredited and start looking early.

      Vanderbijlpark campus

The Vanderbijlpark campus sits beside the Vaal River, a few kilometres from the town centre. Students live in Vanderbijlpark's suburbs and commute by car, taxi or shuttle, so check the daily transport before you sign. The Vaal University of Technology shares the same rental market, which keeps demand high.

        Res or private accommodation?

NWU residences, particularly in Potchefstroom, have a strong house culture and are usually the cheaper route. Private accommodation gives you more independence and a wider choice of room types. Our digs vs. university res guide covers the trade-offs and how to apply for res covers the process.

What to check before you book

          • Distance to your faculty - Potchefstroom is walkable, the other two campuses often are not.
          • Security and lighting on the route home.
          • What the rent includes, and whether the lease runs for 10 or 12 months.
          • NSFAS accreditation for the current year if you are funded - see finding NSFAS accommodation.
          • Read the lease with our lease checklist.
